If you're using a pirate theme for you classroom then this activity is a perfect beginning of the year homework assignment for your new pirate crew! In this activity each student designs their own personal jolly roger. There is a detailed directions sheet and a scoring rubric is included. Students are instructed to design their jolly roger in a way that reflects something about them in a personal way. For example, a student who is into soccer might want to use a soccer ball and crossbones instead of a skull and crossbones.
I always encourage my students to be creative and use more than crayons, colored pencils, and markers to decorate their flags. I've had students use fabric, ribbon, stickers, buttons, photos, guitar picks, and glitter on their Jolly Rogers.
When everyone is finished with his/her Jolly Roger, I have them use their Jolly Rogers to share something about themselves with their new shipmates. It's a fun way to get to know one another.
