You and your class are really excited because your teacher is having a back to school party! She has been planning this party since last school year and locked all her party supplies in her classroom's storage closet. When you arrived to school, your teacher said that the back to school party has been canceled! Your teacher added extra locks to keep the supplies safe over the summer, but when she arrived back to school, she forgot the lock combinations!

Your teacher announced that unless someone was able to figure out the locks there would be no back to school party! She remembers using clues found in her room to create the locks. Then your teacher said, "I will give the class 40 minutes to help figure this out, but after that we need to move on to our next lesson."

You have 40 minutes to unlock the door or there will be no back to school party this year!

I've never done a breakout before, is this still for me?

Yes! We have included a seven-page breakdown of what makes a breakout and how to run it smoothly in your classroom especially for students who have never used them before. Once familiar, you will be able to just post the website and let them work!

What is a Breakout?

A breakout is an activity where participants work in teams to search for clues to solve puzzles and try to “breakout” of a room or break into” a room or locked container within a specific time frame.

What is a Digital Breakout?

A digital breakout has its origins from both the popular escape rooms and the hunt-and-find games. However, instead of physically unlocking a box or door, participants will enter codes varying in letters and numbers into a lock (a.k.a. Google Form) which will then only unlock when all correct codes are entered into it.

Customer feedback also mentioned the benefit of using a Digital Breakout: "I had gotten some paper escape rooms before and while my kids loved them it was a lot of prep. I loved how easy this was! My kids also loved it and got so excited each time they got one correct. Looking forward to purchasing more of these!"

Use appropriate tools strategically. Mathematically proficient students consider the available tools when solving a mathematical problem. These tools might include pencil and paper, concrete models, a ruler, a protractor, a calculator, a spreadsheet, a computer algebra system, a statistical package, or dynamic geometry software. Proficient students are sufficiently familiar with tools appropriate for their grade or course to make sound decisions about when each of these tools might be helpful, recognizing both the insight to be gained and their limitations. For example, mathematically proficient high school students analyze graphs of functions and solutions generated using a graphing calculator. They detect possible errors by strategically using estimation and other mathematical knowledge. When making mathematical models, they know that technology can enable them to visualize the results of varying assumptions, explore consequences, and compare predictions with data. Mathematically proficient students at various grade levels are able to identify relevant external mathematical resources, such as digital content located on a website, and use them to pose or solve problems. They are able to use technological tools to explore and deepen their understanding of concepts.
Support claim(s) with logical reasoning and relevant, accurate data and evidence that demonstrate an understanding of the topic or text, using credible sources.
Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and communicative tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate.
Present information, findings, and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
