Back to School is the most important time for teachers to build a foundation of trust and community for their students. I take my time in the first few weeks of school to get to know my students, and for them to get to know each other. I want them to be comfortable taking academic risks, knowing that not only are they safe if they fail, but that they will continue to learn in the process.
This Back to School Dreams Activity is meant to be used with Kenn Nesbitt’s poem “Welcome Back to School” (available free online). Each year I read the poem to my students, who get a kick out of it, especially the ending! As a “Getting to Know You” Activity, after reading the poem, have your students illustrate or write about their wildest Back to School dreams! Post their finished pieces around the room for them to explore and learn more about each other!
