Fun project for students to introduce themselves. This activity ties into ELA classes by requiring the use animal-themed analogies. Students will create an animal mash-up drawing using traits that compare themselves to traits of animals (e.g. fast as a Cheetah or quiet as a mouse.)
As a first day activity, this project allows students to share insight into their interests and personality in a different format than normal “All About Me” type activities. It also has an ELA tie-in, requiring students to use analogies. Can be handed out to students upon entering the classroom, so they can get right to work.
Depending on students, can include an optional a refresher on analogies or brain storm animal traits. Students can use common traits like “quiet as a mouse” or uncommon ones “swims like a hippo.”
After completion, students may be invited to share their animal mash-up to the class. They also make good decoration for the classroom (such as for back to school night.)
Sample Mash-Up: Student is quiet as a mouse, tall as a giraffe, loyal as a swan, with brown hair like a brown bear, and pretty as a peacock. Drawing might include mouse face, giraffe neck, swan body with wings, colored brown like a brown bear with a large peacock tail.
