Fun project for students to introduce themselves. This activity ties into ELA classes by requiring the use of descriptive words, including location words. Students will design their own private island and describe what’s on their island and why.
As a first day activity, this project allows students to share insight into their interests and personality in a different format than normal “All About Me” type activities. It also has an ELA tie-in, requiring students to use descriptive writing and location words. Can be handed out to students upon entering the classroom, so they can get right to work.
Depending on students, can include an optional a refresher on descriptive writing or location words. Alternately, this activity can be used as an informal pre-test (or formative assessment) on student’s familiarity with good descriptive writing and location words.
After completion, students may be invited to share their island to the class. They also make good decoration for the classroom (such as for back to school night.)
• Welcome to my Island Printable—room for drawing and description.
• OPTIONAL: Island Owner Interview—additional questions related to the island and the student to extend the activity.
• Quick Guide to Descriptive Words handout—hand out includes color, such as for a year-long reference, but also prints well in black/white.
