Classroom rules are a fundamental part of class management and teacher sanity! Rules should not be too complicated, nor should there be too many. In fact, the simpler the rules, the better! The fewer they have to remember, the more they will remember them! I have researched and determined 4 universal classroom rules that can apply to any classroom, any subject and MOST grade levels. They include:
Listen and follow directions
Respect your classmates and teacher
Raise your hand before speaking
Keep hands and feet to yourself
The Back to School Escape Room has students walking around the classroom breaking codes. Students are given a secret code name and sent on a top secret mission to save the class rules! The codes include ciphers, Morse code, cryptograms and a final 4 digit safe combination based on the four decoders/rules.
Each rule or code is different The codes require students to think differently to decipher or decode them. Some codes are easier than others. Some codes require critical thinking to determine what a letter/symbol stands for. Each code will reveal one of the four classroom rules.
The use of secret code will keep your students engaged while competing to solve the final lock combination. No props needed!! Students can report the final lock combination to you. If you wanted to, you could purchase a 4 digit lock that you program, but it is not necessary at all!
The best age range for these codes is 8+. Younger students will need some help with some of the more difficult codes.
You can use the pre-labeled decoders or you can challenge older kids to choose the decoder that works for each of the 4 rules. A set of labeled and non labeled decoders is included.
An answer key is also provided.
Time needed: 30-60 minutes
