Whether you are using a basal program or workshop model, this resource will help set expectations for whole group work in the primary grades at the beginning of the year -- or any time as review. Students will get to practice "Close Reading" with multiple studies of each book for different reasons.

Included in this resource are poster layouts, conversation frames to support discussion/ writing, and purpose statements aligned to 1st grade CCSS:
Using key details to describe story elements, to cite evidence, retell details, find central message/ lesson, feelings (CCSS RL1.1-1.6)
Using illustrations to describe story elements (RL1.7)
Compare/ contrast adventures/ experiences of the same characters across several texts (RL1.9)
Use as mentor text for opinion and narrative writing prompts (CCSS W1.1, 1.3)
Purpose Statements for Chester’s Way:
1st Purpose: Readers collect story elements
2nd Purpose: Readers determine character traits and Character traits are from words, actions, and feelings.
3rd Purpose: Readers notice how characters change.
4th Purpose: Readers notice patterns or repeated ideas that lead to the Author’s Message or Lesson.
5th Purpose: Writers use a mentor text to try ideas.
6th Purpose:Writers use a mentor text to organize their writing.
Purpose Statements for Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse:
1st Purpose: Readers compare and contrast story elements across texts
2nd Purpose: Readers compare and contrast important character traits.
3rd Purpose: Readers chart the plot of a story to determine the Author’s Message.
4th Purpose: Readers notice patterns or repeated ideas that lead to the Author’s Message or Lesson.
5th Purpose: Readers use a mentor text to form an
opinion with evidence.
Extension Ideas:
1. Use character interactions with peers / adults to help generate classroom guidelines.
2. Use Henkes’ mixed illustrations as mentor for student writing (ie. illustrations matching text and adding to understanding beyond text, speech bubbles)
3. Review Chester’s Way over course of the year when new students enroll in class.
