Product Description
This math mystery, “Case of the Super Bad Superhero,” is a great way to add some excitement and fun to your math lessons! NO PREP, just print and go! Students will be working through a variety of math questions to discover which superhero has gone bad!

Use this activity as a fun way to assess math skills of your new students at the beginning of the school year. If this turns out to be too hard, set it has a benchmark to try again later in the year.

You may also wish to use this activity as a math center, as part of your sub tub, or as an early finisher activity,

*NEW Video Hook added to play when introducing students to the math mystery. The Video has been designed to engage and excite your students into the math activity. Using the video is optional, there is a written story provided within if you prefer.

NEW - Editable suspects list added to the packet. This way you can change the superhero names and alter the mystery outcome. There are also two alternative pre-made lists you can use instead.

In this Grade 4 version, the 5 clues cover the following skills:
- Clue 1: Rounding
- Clue 2: Addition (3-digit and 4-digit numbers)
- Clue 3: Subtraction (4 - digit and 5-digit numbers)
- Clue 4: Multiplication Facts (1-12)
- Clue 5: Division Facts (1-12)
PLEASE NOTE: The clues must be completed in the ORDER 1-5 that I have put them in.

Pack also provides teacher instructions, the story, answer sheets, an elimination guide and printable awards.

How long will this activity take?
Time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format, as well as how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class. I highly recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "we must learn something new before attempting the next clue." There are lots of ways to implement this activity in your classroom, learn more in the blog post link below:

MIX & MATCH ACROSS GRADE LEVELS TO DIFFERENTIATE/CUSTOMIZE
You can choose a grade level that suits your class best, and/or mix and match across the same clue numbers (except for the Grade 1 Version) to differentiate and customize the math mystery for your students. The Grade 1 version is simplified as a whole and cannot be mixed with the rest. (For example, swap clue 1 from the Grade 2 version to clue 1 from the Grade 3 version to make that part more challenging for some students.)
