I have used the following back-to-school pages for years in my classrooms. It’s a wonderful icebreaker to introduce the students to each other and to you, their teacher. Students will enjoy the questions which will be a bit more challenging than the usual favorite color kind of questions. They will be challenged to dig a little deeper and think a little higher about who they are.
This 10 page packet starts off with a poem about their uniqueness. Then there is an opportunity to create a self-portrait, which is followed by 8 pages of questions to complete about their family, friends, their fear, hopes, dreams, goals, and even their dislikes.
The pages with their questions are eye-opening to the teacher to gain insight into what makes them tick. Its about finding out who the student is as a person. I usually filled it out too and shared the information with my students. This gave them some insight into their new teacher for the year and served as an example.
The last page is a true gem where the student gets to share a little more with the teacher on a personal level. It’s very important to let them know that you will not share this information with the class but that’s just between you and the student. It gives them an opportunity to open up about their excitement and nerves about the school year and it gives you, their teacher, an opportunity to be better prepared to help them succeed.
