Have you ever had a chaotic first morning of school? Students begin unpacking and asking, “Where do I put the Kleenex?” “Where do I put my pencils?” “Does this go in my desk?” Meanwhile you’re trying to greet students at the door and give those students already in the class directions, am I right?
One of the best back to school tips I’ve learned over the years is to set their desks up for success!
It's the easiest way to create a smooth morning! You can grab it ALL here for free!
This means on each desk you should have:
♥a sharpened pencil (with a cute topper!
) ready to go on each student’s desk before they walk in the door
♥ a resource that will give you insight into who they are that the students can begin working on: All About Me ABC's is my favorite!
♥a tone setter: (I use) a growth mindset bookmark
This eliminates any need to unpack as soon as they enter, allowing you the ability to guide how they unpack and set up materials. After the bell rings we’ll come together and share some of what they wrote. They love seeing what they have in common and learning new things about their classmates. I fill one out too!
Our school has a strong focus on growth mindset. I've seen amazing changes over the last 2 years, and I LOVE to start my new kiddos with it right away. As students look over their new (& bright! Thanks Astropapers!) bookmarks it sets the tone for our first morning together when I’ll dive deeper into talking about the power of YET, positive attitudes, and a growth mindset.
***If you have Meet the Teacher, I’ve included a bonus “note from home” for you! Have parents write a note at the meet the teacher to their child for the first day of school. Have a basket they can place them in, then put them out on the students’ desks the first day of school.
