This Back to School Getting to Know You Data Collection and Graphs packet has 28 different questions for data collection.
The questions are on ¼ of a page, so that the teacher only needs to use up to 7 sheets of paper for this part of the activity. A blank sheet is also included for your own ideas.
Each student gets a different question on which to collect data. The students will write tally marks directly on their sheet. Some of the questions, for example, ones on reading, math, science, and students’ preferences on school activities will be more helpful in understanding your class.
After collecting their data each student creates a bar graph from the data. I have included several choices for the bar graph. If you are working with younger students it might be necessary to review each part of the graph giving the students time to plot their information into the correct place. I have included the scale on one set of graphs for those students who are not ready to do this part on their own. The graphs come in both full size and half size sheets. The bar graphs are now available with spacing between the bars and the y axis.
These graphs would make a great display for Meet the Teacher or Parent Information Night.
One of the questions, the one on favorite shape is one I have used for many years in my class. It is a little “personality” test. I am including a link so that you can go read about your Circles, Squares, Triangles, and Squiggles!
