Teacher Tips & Hints:
Just so you are aware, there is a little upfront work for you, the teacher, but the benefits of seeing your students succeed should outweigh this work. The information that follows should help with the set-up.
Each month, you will need to print off enough Goal & Reflection sheets for your class. You will also need to print off the Monthly Theme and probably some Random Acts of Kindness and Character Counts pages. In addition to printing, you will need to cut up the pages.
As for printing, you really have three options:
Print off in color on regular paper:
We recommend that you print off the pages in color, especially the Monthly Theme, Random Acts of Kindness, & the Character Counts pages. You can print off the Goal Setting & Reflection pages in gray-scale if you want.
Print off in color on label paper:
To do this, you will need to purchase some sheets of full-page labels. In other words, each label page is basically one large label that takes up the entire page. You can buy these online or at your local office supply store. Other retail stores may have them as well. Just a side note, you will need about 50 pages. Of course this option does cost money. You can expect to pay between $30-$40. We have used this option in our classrooms and have found that the students enjoy using the “stickers” once they are cut up.
Print off in gray-scale on regular paper:
You can also print the pages off in gray-scale to save on ink.
Once you have the needed pages printed off, you will need to have a discussion with your students about goal-setting and how this program works. You may want to brainstorm with your students some examples of behavior, academic, & any other type of goal. It may also be helpful if you would type these ideas up and display them for your students.
Random Acts of Kindness:
These are intended for students to perform an act of kindness throughout the month. Some are more complicated than others. Students will need to choose 1 Random Act of Kindness for each month. Once they choose their act, have them “stick” it on their goal sheet. Encourage your students to try to choose a different act for each month.
Students will need to choose 1 Character Counts trait for each month. Once they choose their trait, have them “stick” it on their goal sheet. Encourage your students to try to choose a different trait for each month.
Your students will need to “stick” a monthly theme piece on their goal setting sheet.
You can decide what to do with the goal sheets once your students have completed them, but we have our students glue/tape them into a notebook (see examples). We also have them glue/tape their reflection sheets in their notebooks. If you choose to do this, we have our students glue the reflection sheet first in their notebook and then glue/tape the left edge of their goal sheets on top of their reflection sheet.
We have found that reflecting on their goals plays an important part in the success of this program. Be sure to model a few examples of how to reflect.
Below are some ideas on how to use their goals:
→Use at parent/teacher conferences
→Have students partner up and share their goal and reflections
→Discuss as an entire class
→Review individually with each student during some “free” time
→Send home for a parent/guardian to sign and return
