High school students are often anxious (or rowdy!) on the first day of school, so I like to give them an activity to do as soon as they walk in the door to my classroom! In this activity, students receive a piece of paper with an image on it as they enter the classroom. My seats are marked with the corresponding vocabulary words. Students match their picture with the vocabulary word and that is their seat for the day!
This download includes 36 EASY vocabulary terms touching on material covered in most French 1 classrooms - including simple food, clothing, travel, school and home vocabulary - making this activity appropriate for students entering French 2 and beyond. Sometimes I'll have my upper-level students create a sentence using the word on their card and whip around the class having everyone share their name and sentence. Other times just finding their seats correctly or thinking of another word in French that starts with the same letter of the alphabet is the warm-up for the day.
As I get to know my students during the first week of school, this simple activity allows me to mix up their seating and keep students on their toes while I plot the most effective seating arrangements for the rest of the year! Don't waste time finding clip art yourself at the busy beginning of the school year. Just download, print, cut out and go!
