Every year, teachers soldier on through the typical icebreaker games, doggedly hoping that the cheesy game will not set all introverts against them for the rest of the year. No more of this!
The Starburst Introduction activity actually accomplishes what an icebreaker sets out to do: incorporates every student; gives a meaningful first day activity; creates familiarity and classroom community; and, as a bonus, it creates a unique writing initial writing assessment for fellow ELA teachers.
This product includes an EDITABLE Word, Adobe PDF, and PowerPoint version of the same product. Customize any of the questions (or even your choice of candy). This product also includes a journal entry rubric, though I usually use this assessment as more of a base. Also, I chose Starbursts to avoid any tree nut allergens (though, of course, MS orthodontia may suffer).
Year-after-year, this has been a dynamic way to start my class. Even the shyer students can't wait to volunteer and share responses! I've also seen some incredibly thoughtful answers to some of the questions. As a classroom management strategy, I often individually ask students follow up questions throughout the first quarter about their responses. The kids' eyes light up when they realize I actually went through and care about their answers. Quick, easy way to show you care, and it involves both writing and candy. A win-win!
(Disclaimer: Starbursts not included :).
