This writing assignment is great in the beginning of the school year, although it is a great assignment to use any time of the year. Students pick one quotation that they find inspiring (list of 10 quotations is provided). The quotations are from people from all walks of life (Virgil, Thomas Jefferson, Michael Jordan, etc.). Some quotations are harder to interpret than others. In a five paragraph essay, students will write about their chosen quotation and what it means. They then apply it to their own lives and goals. This assignment includes an overview sheet, a list of quotations, a prewriting graphic organizer and a rubric (note: the rubric is the preview file). I have learned a lot about my students' dreams and goals through this activity and feel it is a wonderful writing assignment.
