Back to School Math Centers for Fifth Grade includes 9 centers for incoming fifth grade students. This set of centers is aligned to fourth grade Common Core Standards, with a focus on the major work of the year. Each center is vibrant and kid friendly. The directions are easy to follow and everything you need is included in this pdf! These centers would look best printed in color. You may want to laminate for durability, but I often use card stock and the pieces seem to hold up quite well. Additionally, each set of centers includes a student recording sheet and an answer key.
Centers are a great way to informally assess your new students, create groupings for upcoming units and teach your students your expectations for independent work periods. Even if you do not use a workshop model for teaching math, centers are a great "finished" early activity!
Areas of focus:
1.) Problem Solving - 8 task cards with mixed problem solving questions. All of the cards use whole numbers and all four operations are included.
2.) Place Value - 20 cards with a variety of questions. Students find the value of base ten blocks, write whole numbers in expanded form and standard form, and compare whole numbers.
3.) Decimal and fraction matching - 12 pairs of equivalent fractions and decimals (tenths and hundredths only) for students to match.
4.) Multi-digit arithmetic - 16 cards for students to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers according to 4th grade standards.
5.) Know that Number - students chose a whole number (number cards included) and complete a number profile sheet with several activities (odd or even, shade the base 10 block, write equations, etc). As a second option, students can choose two numbers and complete a different number profile sheet. Both sheets are included, however there is no answer key for this activity due to the nature of the center.
6.) Fraction Practice - students complete addition and subtraction word problems with fractions and whole numbers with common denominators. Eight problems included.
7.) Equivalent fractions - students fill in the correct value to create an equivalent fraction. 12 cards included.
8.) Geometry - students sort 2 dimensional shapes by their properties. Two charts focused on parallel lines and perpendicular lines are included, as well as 12 2-dimensional shape cards.
9.) Patterns - students complete a numerical pattern according to a rule, then students identify the rule and complete a pattern. 12 cards are included.
