Help your students better understand addition and subtraction concepts with these Back to School Math Mats.
These math mats, created in six different designs are open ended and versatile making it easy for you to use them in a way that best meets the needs of your students.
Decomposing Numbers – Students will use these mats to show how any number can be created using a variety of addends. I have the created two versions of each mat. The first version requires that the students decompose the number into two addends. The second mat allows them to explore breaking the given number into three addends. Just give the students the total (or sum). The students can either write that number in the center of the mat where it says total, or they can count out and place that number of manipulatives on that section of their mat. Students will then explore all of the different ways that they can create that total using a variety of addends. At the bottom of each mat the students can write the number sentence to represent what they have shown using their manipulatives. They will get practice writing the number sentence both with the addends first, as well as with the sum first. For example: 2 + 5 = 7 and 7 = 2 + 5. Once they understand the concept, students can then work together to find all of the different ways to create a number and record it on the recording sheet provided.
Addition / Subtraction Facts and Concepts: For those students struggling with basic facts or even the concept of addition, you can use these mats to help them visualize the concept and in turn master their facts. Give the students the addends or problem to be solved. They can use the manipulatives work out the problem using one-to-one correspondence as that count and move the manipulatives to the total section of the mat to find the answer. The mats can be used in the same way when reviewing subtraction and / or fact families.
As a Center: Students can use these mats to decompose numbers in a center. Just write a number in the total section and students can explore all of the addends that will give them that sum. They can record their answers on the printable sheet provided.
By sliding the printed mat in a plastic page protector the students can write and erase on it many times using a dry erase marker. This allows you to use the mats year after year!
These mats are perfect for both whole group or small group instruction. Be sure to download the preview to get a closer look!
