Product Description
It’s back to school time! These math mystery printables provide you with a fun pre-assessment tool for your 4th grade students. Used during the first week of school, these pages will give you a good idea of where your students are at in the areas of addition & subtraction within 1000, basic multiplication & division, multiplication of a single-digit by a multiple of 10, and rounding numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. Included in this unit are five “Back to School Mystery Joke” printables and full answer keys. The question sheets are differentiated as follows:

- “Back to School Mystery Joke” #1 – Rounding numbers to the nearest 10 or 100
- “Back to School Mystery Joke” #2 – Multiplication of a single-digit by a multiple of 10
- “Back to School Mystery Joke” #3 – Basic division within 100
- “Back to School Mystery Joke” #4 – Addition & subtraction within 1000
- “Back to School Mystery Joke” #5 – Basic multiplication within 100

To complete the activity, students should answer all the questions to find out each letter’s corresponding number. Students then use that information to complete the message by putting each letter on the line that corresponds to the correct number. Some letters may occur more than once in the answer and some may not appear at all. If done correctly, students will find out the punch line to a school-themed joke.

These worksheets could be placed in a math center during the first weeks of the school year or provided to students for independent math practice.

**Please note** that these printables are not meant to be an extensive review, nor do they teach the 3rd grade standards. Rather, these pages are designed to give you a general understanding of where your new students are at, based on some of the previous grade’s standards.
