This is a fun beginning of the year "All About Me" activity to help you and your students get to know each other. The great part about this activity is it will make a very cute display outside your classroom for Curriculum Night or for the first few weeks of school. In addition, it could also be used as a bulletin board display. An added bonus is that when you are finished displaying the All About Me backpacks, they can be glued into your students interactive writing journals and they can look inside the backpack for writing ideas.

What are students creating?
They are making an All About Me 'backpack' (booklet) and filling it with things that represent them. On the front of each backpack, it says, "This backpack belongs to....." and then it has a little rhyme that goes, "If I filled my backpack with things about me, you could peek inside, and this is what you'd see."
Students will get a cover page to decorate, and then you can decide to give them one of three options. 1) They can have a blank backpack page where they create a picture collage of things representing them. 2) They can have blank writing and picture pages that does not include topics, but they will do an illustration and then write something about themselves 3) They can have writing and picture pages with predetermined topics.
When you go to hang these up, I have also included some larger backpack title cards that say, "Please peek in our backpacks." This signals for people to lift the top cover and read about the child.
I have also included a colorful banner to display above the class backpacks. It says, "All About Me".
This can be something you have students complete in class, or have them complete it at home. If you choose the collage sheet, that is something you might want to have them complete at home so they can get pictures and images from the computer or magazines.
Once kids have completed their backpacks, it would be great to have them share with their classmates as a 'get to know you' activity.
In addition, once the backpacks have been displayed, have the kids glue them in their writing journal for a place to look for additional writing topics. They could write about the pictures they glued in or elaborate on the sentences they wrote.
I really think when your parents come in for your curriculum night, they will love seeing and getting to know all the kids in the class. Plus, other teachers that walk by will enjoy peeking inside the bags too and see what each child included.
