Get back to school and books with fun and games! These activities are designed as fun learning activities to engage students during the first week back to school. After reviewing library media center expectations, procedures, and introducing yourself, use these
activities to help promote reading while learning more about the students!
Included in this packet:
• Backpack Coloring Sheet (grades preK-1st)—Introduce yourself to students by placing several objects that represent you (including your favorite book) in a backpack. As you introduce yourself to students, draw the objects out and ask students to predict what interests or hobbies they might represent. Then, give each student a coloring sheet. Ask them to draw things inside their backpack that represent their hobbies and interests.
• Book Fortune Teller (grades 2nd-3rd)—Capitalize on this fun children’s activity to engage students while getting them to discuss books and authors! Give each student a copy of the fortune teller activity. Ask them to follow the directions to complete the fortune teller. They should get up, move around the media center and interview their classmates to learn more about everyone’s reading interests and favorite books.
• Back to the Library Bingo (grades 4th-5th)—Play a round of bingo with the students to get them motivated to discuss books with their peers! After reviewing the expectations and procedures of the media center, have students review their knowledge of books, authors, and library skills with this bingo game.
