I really love this Classroom Procedures board game! There are 60 different game cards that have everyday real life scenarios (What do I do if I need a new pencil? What do I do when I need to use the restroom during a lesson? What do I do when we walk past a classroom with kids working inside?..). These scenarios with common situations gives kids great practice with all of the procedures that you've put into place to make the year go smoothly. Plus, kids love a game format, so it’s something they will really enjoy.
I also like the fact that once the game is over, you can use the game cards throughout the year as a discussion tool. Keep a stack of these on your desk and grab 2 - 3 whenever you have a few minutes of extra time during transitions. This quick reminder goes a long way to promoting good behavior.
The posters are colorful and can be used in a number of ways. For example, you can show the kids a poster and ask them to tell you all of the procedures that go with it. Kids could illustrate one procedure for each topic heading (maybe do one a day, certainly not all at the same time) and then you could display them in the room as a reminder. Or, use one of the red title posters (Procedure of the Day, Procedure of the Week, or Procedure in the Spotlight) and put this on the top (whiteboard with magnets or on the wall) and place a procedure poster below it. Focus on that specific procedure until you think your students have mastered it and then move to another one. Another idea is to pass the posters out to small groups and then have them create a skit for the class, to illustrate the procedure in action. So many possibilities!
This packet also lets you sneak a peek into my own classroom as I included a copy of my classroom procedures as a sample. I keep these as a reference for myself and don’t hand them out to the kids because even though I’ve taught forever, every new set of kids needs to learn these, to help make my classroom the most happy place it can be. I always like to print these out as a reminder for myself. I am hoping that by including this sample set of procedures that you might come up with your own list.
The beginning of the year is such a crucial time as it sets the course for classroom behavior for the whole year. Kids learn so much better when they understand what is expected of them and when the rules are clearly expressed. These activities will help you establish good student habits right from the start to help you, as well as your students, have an awesome year!
If you enjoy this set, I do hope you’ll check out my Back to School Activities for 3rd, 4th, or 5th grades. There are lots of worksheets, games, icebreakers, math activities and a writing activity to help get the year started. The Back to School Sets also contain a set of 32 task cards with scenarios that are similar to the ones found in the Star Procedures Game but in a task card format. The questions are different enough that your students should enjoy doing these and practice what they would do in each of the scenarios presented. The task cards can also be purchased separately.
