I have used this as a beginning-of-year writing sample in my fourth and fifth grade classes (though I asked my fifth graders what their fourth grade teachers would say, not their third grade teachers). It gives the teacher good information regarding individual writing skills, from organization of ideas and vocabulary usage to capitalization and punctuation, as well as writing stamina and effort on assignments. This assignment also gives some insight into how the student thinks he/she was perceived by a previous teacher (based on both academics and behavior). Some students are more aware than others of how they are viewed by teachers, and some students are more honest and self-reflective than others. You can get some interesting insights from reading these writing samples!
