A real life math problem for students to solve! This activity gives students a list of school supplies to shop for (it also includes blank spaces for teachers to add their own supplies.) Students must determine where to buy the supplies, how much it will cost for each supply and how much money they will spend all together. The class count have a contest to see who could spend the least amount of money on supplies. (Best completed as a partner activity.)
NOT INCLUDED: Store flyers. I picked these up for free at local drug stores, supermarkets or other office supple stores for my students. You could also allow students to shop right on the websites of these stores if you have access to technology such as iPad.
After the activity there are questions for students to answer in order to help them reflect on their math work. Also includes supplemental "coupons" to give to higher level students to challenge them and lower level students to aid them in completing the work.
