This informal screening tool is useful for screening three areas: articulation, semantics, and grammar. Use it to assist with beginning of year speech and language screenings or ones that may pop up throughout the year. It features black and white pictures only, so it’s easy for students to participate but also easy on your printer!
~All English consonants are included in the articulation section. Scoring sheets are also included, with plenty of space for note taking.
~Semantic areas targeted include: basic concepts, categories, sequencing, comparing, contrasting, and object functions.
~Grammar skills include: helping verbs, past and present verb tenses, pronouns, and regular and irregular plurals.
Would be appropriate for Pre-k through 3rd grade.
You can choose to print a new copy for every use or laminate one copy for students to view and use the scoring sheets to record the student's answer. You can administer the entire screening or bits and pieces as you see fit. The choice is yours!
***This screener does not include a pass/fail criterion or a number to determine when to refer for further evaluation. That determination is up to the clinical discretion of the therapist. It depends on many factors, including age, type of error, and comorbidities. This resource is intended to give qualitative data when screening, rather than quantitative. Clinicians should use all available data to determine need for further evaluation.
