Back to School First Day Student Self-Portrait Printable Activity
What is it?
A great activity to start off the back-to-school season. Nice way to "ease" students into that first day or week and gives teachers insight into what their new kiddos know already AND keep them interested and occupied while you are busy greeting new students, parents and solving any unexpected first week predicaments.
Incorporates a fun "craftivity" (I'm trademarking that word by the way) ;) name-writing skills, beginning reading and writing skills, listening and following directions skills, fine motor skills and more!
Could also be incorporated as a beginning of the year CENTER activity for the fine motor or art center possibly? :)
- Thorough directions/instructions
- 1 Black and white self-portrait frame with poem
- 3 Colored self-portraits frames with poem (blue, green, red)
What to Do:
Print out the black and white version frame or your choice(s) of the colored frames. Make sure to print enough for all students, plus a few extra for mistakes.
I place them on the students’ desks the first day as a Morning Work Activity.
Students should write their name on the top line. Draw a picture of what they look like today. Make it look as much like them as possible. I put a sample of ME on the board too.
The date for the first day goes on the bottom 3 lines. Depending on the age group, either the students or the teacher may write this part.
I save my pictures and make 2 copies. One I set out on the desks for parents for Open House to help find their child’s seat. The other I save all year to put in our End of the Year Books. I have the students do a last day of school portrait too, so we can compare both pictures. The students love it and so do the parents!
