Another New Year and Fresh New Faces!
I have been teaching for nine years and I know that first year and veteran teachers are always looking for materials that will make the first days of school organized and less stressful.
The absolute most important handout a teacher will give the first week of school is a no brainer---the syllabus!
Your syllabus is a contract between you, your students, and their parents. A CONTRACT is binding. If the policy, rule, or procedure is explained on your syllabus, it will be difficult for a parent to argue a point if that point was already explained on a document that parent signed. Their signature represents an agreement between you, the student, and parent.
A syllabus is a document that will formally let your students know what is expected, when, and how. Everything a student needs to know about your class should be on your syllabus. On my syllabus I have the following:
♦Late Work Policy
Many teachers are often looking for a discipline plan that works as well. The one included on my syllabus has always worked like a charm for me!
I have also found that strict regulation of rules and procedures and immediate work sets the tone for a classroom that is conducive to learning and rigor hence the vocabulary assignment the very first day of school.
I use this syllabus my tenth grade World Literature class; however, it can be modified for any class and any grade level 6-12.
Good luck with your school year and I hope it is a great one!
