This is cooperative learning project that allows students to work together to create a back to school design. Working in teams of four, students take on different roles to successfully complete a task. Perfect for the beginning of the year, this activity focuses on teams working together, not skill mastery. Great for introducing the need for social skills, this activity can be an icebreaker leading into a discussion in creating the caring classroom.
After introducing the task, you may find it helpful to set a time limit. If you need to some groups with 5, add a timekeeper to keep groups on time. In groups of 4, you might have the 'gluer' also be the timekeeper.
To tie this activity into a writing assignment, you could have students describe their creations. For shared writing, groups could present their designs, and with you holding the pen, have the class offer suggestions to the descriptions you write. The possibilities for extension are endless!
