The Welcome Kit activity provides the elementary, middle, and even high school teacher an opportunity to build community within her classroom as well as set behavioral expectations in a positive and encouraging way. Do you want your students to act with charity and kindness towards their classmates, to consider the feelings and situations of others, and to practice the golden rule? This activity will give students that chance.
Presented with ten objects that appear to have no relationship to character building or each other, students are asked to think metaphorically to determine how each object could get their year off to a great start. Working in small groups, they report out their guesses and see how close they have come to the symbolic purpose of each item. Teaching instructions are included. This great beginning of the year community building activity can also be a lot of fun. Enjoy!
