This is a great letter to have on students' desks the first time they enter your classroom. I always have it on their desks for open house or back to school night for the kids to read, but putting it on their desks the first day of school is great too. The letter welcomes students to "our" classroom and explains that every student is an important piece of the classroom puzzle.
The three things I put on their desk to go along with the letter include:
1) A pencil - to remind them that even small items help us out. The letter goes on to explain that sharing their ideas, knowledge, and creative thoughts in class no matter how large or small will make a difference.
2) An eraser - to remind them that nobody is perfect. The letter explains that some of the best inventions we enjoy today have come from mistakes.
3) A Jolly Rancher - to help them keep in mind that their positive attitude, hard work, and thoughtfulness to others will ensure that we have a "jolly" year together!
I hope you enjoy the letter and ideas. The kids always love finding this on their desk : )
