“Who’s Who?” activity: This activity is perfect for letting your students get to know each other! They fill out the “Guess Who?” page with their “favorites” and then draw and color a self portrait of themselves to be stapled behind the “Guess Who?” page. These can be hung up out in the hallway or on a bulletin board inside the classroom. They are also cute for parents to look at for an Open House Night or Parent Night! CCSS ELA-L.W.1.5, 2.5
“We are going to be “ALL STARS” This Year!” activity: Your students will have fun being stars with this activity! They can put their names on a star and decorate it to show their hobbies and personalities. Then, they can look at their friends' stars to fill out the “My Friends are All stars” worksheet to help them get to know one another better! CCSS.ELA-L.L.1.2, 2.2
“Matching up My Friends!” Center/Game: My students love this game every year! It’s a friend Memory Match and you can play it more than one way! Included: “NAME KNOWLEDGE" and "NAME MATH" worksheets. CCSS. ELA-L.RF.1.1,1.2
“We Can Count on Each Other This Year!” activity: This is a fun way to decorate your room AND do a little math and citizenship! CCSS.ELA-L.L.1.2
“Back To School Vocabulary Words”: This set of vocabulary cards is the perfect way to get your students right into “Word of the Day” or “Word Work” activities. I have given you a “Back to School Vocabulary” organizer, 12 words with definitions and other language use, covers for student “Back to School Word Journals,” and a page to copy for their journal pages for recording words. Also- EMPTY WORD CARDS IF YOU WANT TO CHOOSE OTHER WORDS AS WELL!
You can hang the organizer and then put all the words up on and around it, or introduce a few words each day. Before students record a word in their journals, in whole group time, I usually:
*go over the meaning or definition
*Clap syllables for the word
*look for base/root word in the word
*Discuss part of speech
*give a sentence example and then let the students give sentence examples with the word
*discuss synonyms or antonyms for the word
Finally, I have my students go to their seats and help them put the word onto one of their word journal pages.
The words stay up until I’m ready for a new set depending on our theme or Core Content and we use them for various discussions and review! CCSS.L.1.1.4, 1.5/ 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5
“Back to School BINGO”: This board can be used to practice names or Vocabulary words or for whatever you choose!
