Informally assess your new students' ability to convert fractions to decimals and percents with this nice little activity! Students think of back-to-school words or phrases ranging from three to twelve letters and calculate the fraction/decimal/percentage of the word that is comprised of vowels. You'll get some early information on who can convert with ease and who cannot, and your students will love thinking of related words as they start a fresh new year!
One example is given (division included) so students can (hopefully) work independently while you attend to new-school-year business!
