Get your students writing right away!! These 3 activities are perfect for the first couple of days in your secondary classroom.
1. Hello My Name Is
This is an excellent alternative to the typical boring questionnaire. It includes more creative, unique questions such as "What is on your bucket list?" mixed with creative writing and doodles and drawings. A great way to get to know your students' unique personalities.
2. Letter to my Future Self
This assignment is perfect for middle school students or high school freshmen. The assignment asks students to write a letter to themselves (presumably to be read as seniors, but you can decide how old their "future self" will be). Again, this is a great way to get your students writing on the first day of school. My students write their letter as freshmen and I keep them in envelopes and give them to them as seniors. They love it!
3. My Reading Autobiography
This assignment allows for you to gauge your student's writing skills while also giving you an idea of their reading background. The assignment asks students to write a brief "autobiography" of themselves by explaining their favorite books as a child and how their relationship has changed/grown over the years.
