These writing prompts will be a great way to get to know your students as writers! With these prompts, you will be able to assess:

Included is a list of 15 back-to-school writing prompts that can be copied for individual student use. There are 5 printable lined writing papers. Printable prompt cards that could be easily laminated and used for centers are included. Finally, an observational assessment form is included for the teacher to keep a record of his/her initial reactions to students’ writing. This will help guide future instruction.

The Common Core State Standard for grade 3 writing and beyond that apply:
• W.3.10. Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.
Students can respond to the prompts by:

• Making lists
• Writing paragraphs
• Sketching
• Making a Timeline
