Back to school writing: Download a sample of this resource by clicking here.
This resource gives you lots of writing ideas for different genres: narrative, expository and opinion. I always find I’m looking for new writing ideas to use with my students not only during our writing block, but also as homework, Daily 5 or quick writes. This resource is built around three themes perfect for August and September – back to school, all about me and apples. Each theme starts with a brainstorming sheet. I also included a variety of planning and graphic organizers, as well as paper to be used for a final copy. Most of the organizers are lined and unlined – I find each of my students needs something different.
The table of contents at the beginning of each theme
(and at the very beginning of the resource) is hyperlinked, so
all you need to do is click on the topic title and you can jump
to those pages you need!
This resource is all about variety – variety in topics, organizers, etc. I did choose to use a similar format for each type of organizer so students are familiar with the set-up. You won’t find any cute crafts or cut-outs to use for a fancy display. As teachers, we know that much of our students’ writing is not “published” in the traditional sense, but is created to be shared with others in less formal ways. Use the organizers to brainstorm ideas. Then choose an organizer to use for writing. You can always stop there! For many beginning writers, just getting their idea down on the planning sheet in an organized way is tough enough! But if you want to
go further, I included writing paper themed for each topic.
The topics in this month's resource are:
All About Me
Summer Fun: How was your summer? Share a fun day you had or place you went over the summer.
All About Me: Tell about yourself! What are some important things should people know about you?
According to Me: Are you the oldest, middle, youngest or an only child? What is great or
not great about that?
Back to School
Back to School: Tell about your first day (or week) of school this year.
How to Pack a Lunch: Explain how to pack a really fantastic lunch for school.
