Need a writing activity for older students that is unique, easy to differentiate, and accomplishes SEVERAL genres of writing?

This highly flexible, choice-oriented menu project gives students 40 prompts across 8 high-interest topics: Summer, Goals & Plans, You, Classes, Real Life, August, September, and Free Choice.

This project would be particularly beneficial for:
• Get-to-know-you activities (for the teacher’s eyes only OR whole-class)
• A pre-assessment of writing skills across genres
• Starting a writing portfolio
• Building up writing endurance

Use the provided brainstorming page, rubric, and story starters to make this project easy to implement and assess; adjust the scope of the project to the length of time you need it to occupy. (I am suggesting up to 2 weeks, but it would be simple to lengthen or narrow the focus.)

This 5-page download includes:
Prompts: 2 pages of 40 prompts in 5 genres across 8 topics
Rubric: a Common Core-aligned rubric by genre (including grammar!)
Brainstorming: page of at-a-glance planning across genres
Story Starters: 28 story starters to help with the creative writing component (divided by topic)

CCSS Standards assessed include: W.1, W.2, W.3, W.7, L.2, L.4
