This is a detailed lesson plan for teaching SMART goal setting to middle and high school students. It's a fun and easy way to learn goal setting – perfect for New Year's resolutions or setting goals at the beginning of the school year, marking period, or term!
The lesson plan includes both a full, narrative format, as well as a shorter, easy-to-use, no prep script so you can basically just print and teach!
Teaching Objectives include:
- teaching secondary students how to properly set goals;
- giving them a tool to achieve more in life;
- teaching time (and emotion) management;
- strengthening internal sense of discipline and motivation.
The lesson guides you through a 5-Step process for teaching SMART goal setting, starting with:
1) Identifying our core values
2) Choosing a SMART goal
3) Setting sub-goals
4) Staying accountable
5) Celebrating achievement
The lesson plan is designed to be used in conjunction with the free Goal Setting Worksheets available at my store here
, which also include inspirational quotes to post in the classroom and mini-posters for a classroom display.
The lesson is best taught across multiple days (4 to 5), but could be condensed into one 45-minute class if absolutely necessary.
