Back to school Visual Arts and Reading Comprehension Activities
Using the artist Wassily Kandinsky as inspiration, this activity will not only allow you to gain valuable diagnostic data about your students’ previous knowledge in the elements of visual arts, but also their reading comprehension skills they are bringing to your classroom at the start of the year.
As a bonus, you will also have a large piece of artwork to display in your classroom. This art piece will model Kandinsky’s “Color Squares”. It will be made up of individual ¼ circles that represent each student in your class put together to make one large community artwork (there is a picture of an example in the teacher notes you are purchasing).
It’s a great visual to remind everyone in the class that although we are all unique, we need to figure out a way to get along all year. We don’t have to be best friends, but we can come together as a cohesive group. I found over the years it is a big help when dealing with classroom management. When the bickering starts between students as it inevitably will, you can use the visual as a reminder that we’re all in this together and we have to find a way to get along with each other.
This package is unique because not only did I provide you with my personal lessons, rubrics and student handouts, I have also included all of my planning and pedagogy that goes with it including my teacher “look fors” when I’m assessing.
I have fully explained how I use this activity in my classroom, why I have done certain things, and how I try to assess “in the moment” to create rich, authentic assessment while saving myself hours of paper pencil marking.
I hope you find this activity useful.
This package includes the following items:
1) My personal teacher notes explaining my thinking that goes with my teaching
and my pedagogical reasoning in pdf format
