" This Summer My Feet Went Walking..." Craftivity.
Thank you for your interest This craftivity can be used in the first couple of weeks in pretty much any grade. It is a great way to learn about your students a little bit more. Because this is usually my first writing activity of the year I use it as an assessment. After I have displayed it, I file it in their writing folders.
The way I do this activity in 2nd grade is by brainstorming where students have gone over the summer. We write their favorite place that they went over the summer on the board. After, I model, and even give sentence frames for the sentences I would like them to write. “This summer I went…. I went to _______ with…. My favorite part was when…” I have them write something like this. I scaffold this so much because it is usually the first week of school when I do this craftivity. After they have written a rough draft, I edit their writing and give it back to them to write their final on the shoe. I have provided 2 shoes with lines in case they need more room to write. After student have finished their writing, I let them illustrate where their feel went walking on the shoe labeled “illustration.” Also, they can decorate both shoes. When displaying the shoes on 12x18 construction paper, you can layer the shoes they wrote their narrative on so that there is room for the shoe illustration, too. This makes a really cute bulletin board!!
