This introductory microbiology lab can be easily adapted for middle school or high school students. It allows students the opportunity to work with petri dishes, agar and an incubator to compare bacteria collected from different locations on your school's campus.
This lab is designed to support building inquiry skills with your students by having them write the scientific question, hypothesis, variables & constants either individually or as a class. The analysis questions facilitate both quantitative and comparative comparisons as well as the opportunity for students to learn how Microbiologists describe bacterial colonies.
Detailed teacher notes and linked resources are included to help teachers who are not familiar with microbiology labs, although you must have access to the following specialized equipment:
- sterile petri dishes (minimum of 1 per student)
- nutrient agar powder
Sample answers are included and the lab sheet is completely editable so you can customize it based on your own needs.
