There are three closed syllable words on each bag of chips. Closed syllable words are CVC type word forms such as: VC, VCC, CVCC, CCVC, CCVCC. Students are to read the words, and the word that does not rhyme is the word they are to write inside the white box on the chip bag. For example, a student will read the words fad, dad, and cab. Since the word cab does not rhyme with fad and dad, then the student is to write the word cab in the white space on the chip bag.
These task cards will help students to master the skill of phonemic awareness, which is the ability to hear the smallest unit of sound. These cards will also help students become familiar with onset rimes. An onset rime is blending the initial consonant(s) with the vowel and consonant(s) that follow. For example, the consonant -f in fad is the onset consonant, and –ad is the rime that follows. So again, the student will be able to differentiate which word on each bag of chips has a different rime from the other two words that have the same rime.
