Another real world project that my students enjoyed! It may have been the fact that they were able to bake / cook a recipe that they enjoyed and share it with the class or it might have been the math. Who knows! But I will take it :)
Students will use the skills they’ve learned with fractions multiplication and division and proportions in a real world situation involving recipes.
Students will each need to find a recipe of their choosing. The recipe must have at least 5 fractions with 3 different denominators that serves at least 4 people.
Once students have found their recipe, students will re-write the recipe for different situations involving increasing and decreasing the servings and amounts of ingredients.
Ex: If they recipe calls or ½ cup of flour and it serves 6 people, how many cups of flour would I need if I want to serve twice as many people? Or half as many people? Or 75 people? You can customize the questions.
Students will put their recipes together in a recipe book (6 recipes). I offer extra credit if they bring in their recipe to share with the class.
