What people, places, and things givesyou energy? What takes your energy away?

This activity teaches social emotional homeostasis, the idea that we need more things in our lives that give us energy than take energy away. It helps us think about whether we have more things in our life that give us energy or that take energy away from us.

First, students draw an arrow into the circle for each person, place, or thing that gives them energy and label it. Next, they draw a label out of the circle for each person, place, or thing that takes energy away from them and label it, as well.

Finally, students tally the number of in and out arrows they have. You may wish to allow students to weight their arrows, or they may ask to do so without prompting. For example, students might weight the in arrow "spending time with mom" at a 3, and the out arrow "dad died" at a 7. If students choose to weight their arrows have them tally the weighted arrows. After tallying, have students figure whether they have more in or out arrows.

To feel healthy and balanced, humans need to have more things in our lives that give us energy than take energy away. When we don’t, we either need to remove one or more of the things taking energy away from us, or add one or more things that give us energy.

Use this worksheet as a way to help students self-evaluate over time, identify positive and negative things impacting their life, or gain awareness of situational factors contributing to their wellbeing.
