Knowing that both sides of an equation need to be equal to be balanced is a skill that my 3rd graders have difficulty with. This will give them the practice they need and they'll also practice using mental math. It's a win-win deal with this activity!
This activity is geared for 3rd and 4th graders but would work for enrichment for 2nd grade or RTI for a 5th grader.
There are 30 equation cards that students will sort into two piles: balanced equations and not balanced equations.
I also included two follow up activities in case you want students to show their work or you need that accountability. :) One page just asks them to record the letter of the cards that balances and didn't balance. The other sheet asks them to choose 6 unbalanced equations and rewrite them to be balanced.
Answer keys have been included.
