Do your students need to practice balanced equations? Do you own a couple of number balance scales? I was lucky enough to "inherit" a bunch of balances, but lacked structured activities for students to practice with. This year's group needs a lot more structure, so my solution is these number balance work mats!
Included: 10 work mats that you can laminate or slip into sheet protectors, a worksheet so they can record their answers, and an answer key.
Teaching Tips: Partner students up and show them how to put two weights on two numbers on each side. Then switch sides for two numbers. If that doesn't work, the other partner should try switching one of those numbers with the other number. The first partner should check that the correct numbers where used. Next, write the numbers in the boxes (this is the balanced equation). Last, to check their work, students should solve. For example, on the "A" sheet, they should have 2+5 and 3+4. 7 should be written under both number sentences.
