This balanced literacy framework is based on a gradual release model based in part on the work of Fisher and Frey. This one-page visual artistically presents the critical balanced literacy components of the ‘I do,’ ‘We do,’ You do it together,’ and ‘You do it independently.’ With each component the visual provides a bulleted list defining the separation of the teacher and student roles key to gradual release. For example, under the “You Do It” component the students’ roles are to: apply learning, practices, self-corrects, problem solves, and practices while the teacher scaffolds, validates, coaches, observes, clarifies and encourages. Further, common activities for reading, writing and word work within each component are listed. For example, under the “We Do” section reading activities include: shared reading, the think along, and scaffolded reading. A further visual in the center of the page illustrates the relationship between teacher support and student centered work. The pages colors and extensive information works especially well printed in color on 11"x17" paper.
