This is an introductory lesson to the concept of equations. Students are introduced to the idea of both sides of the equation needing to balance in the minds on with the use of a scales interactive tool. The action portion has them creating as many equations as they can by using the information they are given in three equations. This is all done with symbols rather than numbers allowing students to start to feel comfortable with the concept without being overwhelmed or feel challenged with the computations. It allows the a variety of strategies to create the equations - I am often surprised by how students tackle this problem.
It is a three part lesson with a minds on, action, consolidation, 'show what you know' and a journal prompt. The show what you know is a great opportunity for a formative assessment.
