This one-of-a-kind Power Point teaches beginning chemistry students how to balance equations using the "Formula Drop-Down Method". I developed this original approach to help my 8th graders understand the concept of chemical equations as recipes and balancing as a way of determining the "amount" of each reactant and each product. By following a few simple rules clearly outlined, my students were remarkably successful not just at finding the correct coefficients, but also understanding what they mean (molar ratios) and why they're needed (Conservation of Mass). There is nothing quite like this available on the web; give it a try and you will be amazed at how quickly your students will learn how to balancing equations using my "Formula Drop-Down Method". This is the first in a series of three different Power point presentations that use common reactions for balancing. Be sure to check out Formula Drop-Down #2 and #3.
