PowerPoint and accompanying notes to introduce the topic of balancing a chemical equation. Includes the topics of chemical reactions, reactants vs. products, law of conservation of matter, subscripts vs. coefficients, a description of what different molecules look like (i.e. how 2H is different than H2), and a step-by-step guide on how to balance an equation. There are also opportunities for students to practice built in to the PowerPoint and Notes. This purchase includes a PPT file and a PDF file. Please note, neither file is editable. Please see the preview file for additional details.

In my opinion, this product could be used to support the teaching of Next Generation Science Standard MS-PS1-5** when used in conjunction with other materials. To be clear - this is not a comprehensive guide to the standard but I believe it could be used to start students on the path to mastering it. The standard states:
"Develop and use a model to describe how the total number of atoms does not change in a chemical reaction and thus mass is conserved. "
