I usually demonstrate this concept whole group with a real scale and bear manipulatives. Students roll two dice and build the equation on one side and then they have to think of another equation that would equal the same amount for the other side.
Make copies of the scale and laminate for each student or for pairs.
Copy and laminate the anchor chart and use for a reference.
Copy and laminate the colored bears for each student or pairs.
Make a copy of the equation sheet for each student or pair. Have students cut out the equations.
Students will use the colored bears to demonstrate the equations on the scale to see if they are equal or balanced.
Students will glue equations on the recording sheet.
Includes a formative or summative assessment.
