Often students look at an equal sign and think the “answer” comes after it. To build a solid foundation when learning about equality, students need to view the equal sign as a balance.
This product is a workmat for students to balance equations on both sides of the equal sign. It can be used for both addition and subtraction equations. A sample of how to use the mat is also included.
I run the mats off on card stock and then laminate them. The students use a dry erase marker to do their work, so the mats can be used again and again. It takes demonstration and practice to help them understand, but my first graders love the challenge of the “Prove It” mat! I find that they often draw the balance and table on their state assessments when solving problems.
